Dan Patten’s Blog – Getting Back on Track

Dan Patten’s Blog – As the season rolls on the races are coming thick and fast. May was always going to be an important month with the Belgium Cup (Beker Van Belgie/Coupe de Belgique) series taking center stage.

As I mentioned in my last blog post, I’d been to see the doctor after feeling very low for a couple of weeks. Of course, things weren’t going to turn around overnight but I was hoping that it wouldn’t take long before I was feeling back to normal.

I continued to keep things easy in training and low and behold on the day of my first cup race of the season in Kampenhout the body didnt feel half bad.

Despite how I had been feeling previously, I put myself at the head of the action from the off… maybe getting a littled carried away considering how little riding I had been doing, but I wasnt there to make up the numbers.

Mixing it up in the Beker van Belgie.

Despite going off the front a number of times in the first half of the race and being in the thick of the action nothing was being allowed to stay away for too long, and with an average speed of getting on for 44 km/hr by the end of the race it is easy to see why.

Being a public holiday in Belgium meant even larger crowds out on the course, which you couldnt help but feed off.

After a larger out and back loop the 160km race finished with 7 laps of a tight, fast kermesse type circuit.

In the last 30km I began to pay a little for the earlier efforts and was forced to sit in (or hang on as it was at certain points) as we motored around the finishing circuits).

In the last few kms I thought I would try and salvage something from the day’s efforts and moved from the back, passing riders all the way to the line, ending up around the 30’s placing. Nothing spectacular in terms of positioning (officially placed as 22nd along with many riders) but some points for the team and certainly something to take into the next round of the cup when hopefully the body will be even better.

Whilst I did the Belgium Cup I made the conscious decision to give myself a week off racing afterwards, since I hadnt had one all season. Hopefully it’s allowed me to recharge the batteries a bit.

One of my favourite tools.

I’ve been getting back to basics and just getting some steady km’s in the saddle and trying (as much as possible) to chill out inbetween.

Living in a nice town like Oudenaarde has its advantages here too. With a community of British speaking riders based here, it’s easy to meet up and just go and spend some time chilling at a café or two in town… it dosnt always have to be hard graft!

With the sun shining and an evening kermesse just down the road in Kluisbergen-Ruien, it seemed the ideal night to test the body out, and so I did, tearing it up early on and with it bagging myself a few primes.

The main reason for being there was to test the body and on what was a pleasant evening in Belgium and with good crowds, cobbles and primes every lap I couldnt help but do it by attacking through the start finish cobble sections.

By the end I rolled in 22nd (again) but by riding so aggressively early on I had bagged myself a fair few euros for my efforts… not a bad night’s work.

A normalized power of 339 watts for the 102km race with a max of 1216 watts (no doubt on one of my attacks through the cobbles) tells me that the body had it’s test right enough.

Now to the weekend!

Dan Patten Blog; Up and Running

So it's been a fairly quiet start of the season for me, but I can say now on the Dan Patten Blog that things are underway. A blood test here in Belgium revealed lower iron levels, which most likely explains my lethargic start to the new year.

Winning the Winston Criterium & Returning to Europe!

Once again its been a hectic month or two and so too much to write about in a single blog post. I really should start writing a book! So I am going to keep this fairly short and sweet focusing on another victory (in the Winston Criterium) added to season 2013 and a return to Europe after five months away!

Dan Patten, Season 2013 – Over and Out!

So its been a few months since my last blog posting but now a week into my off-season its time to put some words together and sign off on this 2013 season. Having stepped on the plane to the USA way back on February 4th and now already in November its been a busy nine months; five months in the USA to start with and four months between USA/Belgium/UK is a lot of km's covered... by plane, car, boat and of course by bike!

The season is here and so I thought it was about time that I posted my first Dan Patten Blog entry of 2012, to fill you in on whats been happening over the winter months and what I am up to in this coming season.

Scottish Time Trial Championships in April? But like Dylan said; ‘The Times They are a Changin’... Sunday was horrible, wind, rain, cold – just what my bad throat and chest didn’t need. Step forward our Editor, Martin who, despite having been riding in the storm all morning to help with filming John Anderson's Tour o' the Borders sportive, braved the ghosts from the biggest Iron Age in Scotland, which sits up on the 1400’ White Meldon to brandish the Nikon into the gale force storm.

The VV View: Cadel Evans – not a man to ‘say the right thing’

I had one of my secret meetings with Ivan yesterday-I can't tell you when or where, in case the Moderator from Velo Riders tries to arrange a 'hit!' The man from behind the Urals was telling me that we didn't see on Eurosport, after Cadel's win, was the press conference he gave.

Rotterdam Six Day 2012 – Day Five; Dernys

Dernys, you love them or you hate them, they’re a big part of the Sixes; and always with a capital ‘D’ — Roger Derny et Fils first manufactured them in Paris, in: 1938. There’s some real Derny history on the boards here at the Rotterdam Six Day — the tall, slim, grey haired man who chases the riders up to their events here at the is Bruno Walrave.

Adrian Timmis – Part Two; Life After Z-Peugeot

When we left Adrian Timmis at the end of the first part of the interview he’d taken a stage in the Midi Libere in 1987 and survived a gruelling Tour de France the same year but had just completed an unfulfilling 1988 season with Z-Peugeot who, despite having signed him for two years, cut him loose after just 12 months.
