Giro d’Italia 2012 – First Rest Day: Or Is It?

HomeRaceRace ReviewsGiro d’Italia 2012 – First Rest Day: Or Is It?

Giro d’Italia 2012 – First Rest Day, but now there’s a misnomer; ‘rest day.’ But ‘day to facilitate huge transfer which we have to carry out after our money spinning exercise in Denmark‘ doesn’t quite roll off the tongue as easily. Let’s go back to the reason the UCI introduced two rest days into Grand Tours, along with regulations to govern stage and total race lengths.

There’s a clue in the name, ‘rest’ – it was part of a raft of measures designed to lessen the stresses and strains on the riders.

Read; ‘stop them having to kit up.’

But rest days have now become a vehicle for crazy transfers.

The race has hardly started, a prologue and two pan flat stages is hardly going to have worn anyone out.

And the second rest day isn’t for almost two weeks, not next Monday, but the one after.

I suppose the argument could be that they’ll really appreciate that one.

The riders don’t like transfers by air – buses and trains they can live with, but flying and the reduced cabin air pressures cause fluid to gather in the muscles.

Really what’s required after a flight is a couple of easy days to loosen the legs.

Not a death or glory 20 mile team time trial conducted at close to team pursuit speeds.

When riders’ legs are exploding tomorrow, they won’t be thanking anyone for the ‘rest day.’

And don’t worry, Cav gets a mention.

Being up north for a few days, I’ve not had time to sit and study all the images online.

But there is a side on shot of Cav in the Independent, this morning – his shorts are all but gone and the colour of his thigh matches his red sprint leader’s jersey.

That was a ‘sore one’ – you can’t loose that much skin and it not hurt.

But like Vik says, it comes with the territory.

The TTT – hard to call, Garmin and Liquigas are the masters and Sky have some big horsepower.

But something says, ‘BMC’ to me.

Tour of the Meldons 2016 – Smart and Curran Retain Their Scottish Titles

Chris Smart (GTR) put on another exemplary performance in the Tour of the Meldons hilly time trial in the Scottish Borders to retain his national title for the 'Olympic Time Trial' for the third time in a row, his 56:08 being 75 seconds faster than his time for the same course last year and 67 seconds faster than silver medallist Kyle Gordon (Sandy Wallace Cycles). Ride London 2016 Goes to Tom Boonen

The worst thing about going to the Tour? Coming back. ‘Cold turkey’ is tough – Dave and I used to go to a kermis on the Monday after the Tour finished to ease our ‘crash.’ And last year Callum and I went to the post Tour crit in Aalst. Not this year however because we flew home from Geneva. But our man Callum found another solution; he got himself down to the ‘Ride London’ race; whilst we had to watch it on TV – with no coverage of the crucial last few K. But Callum let us have some pictures - we hope you like them.

David Campbell Memorial Road Race 2013

On a typical Scottish spring afternoon of ‘Four Seasons in One Day’ Herbalife/Leisure Lakes’ talented 18 year-old English rider, Harry Tanfield fully justified the ‘Elite’ stamp on his license to win Kennoway Road Club’s David Campbell Memorial Race over 80 tough Fife miles around the Cults Hills. With 2013 results which include, 10th Heist Op Den Berg; 2nd Evergem Belzele and 8th Tourinne-Saint-Lambert Kermises in Belgium, Tanfield’s win would have come as no surprise if we’d done our homework.

Alexander Kamp takes the Tour de Yorkshire Stage 3 into Scarborough

A wall of sound greeted Alexander Kamp as he sprinted to a nail-biting victory on the third stage of the Tour de Yorkshire. Scarborough’s North Bay provided a dramatic finish location for the fifth year in succession, and as the waves crashed onto the coastline, a crescendo of noise also erupted as a vastly reduced peloton raced onto the closing straight.

Giro d’Italia 2008 – Day 9: Stage 20, Rovetta – Tirano

Paolo Savoldelli 10 out of 10, Danilo Di Luca 9.5 out of 10: the Gazzetta gave Friday to LPR - and so they should. Stage racing at it's best; even if Contador wins on Sunday in Milano, Di Luca can hold his head high. Ricco gets a 9; if he can keep his feet on the ground then he must surely win a giro - but not this one. Contador on 6.5; as Diquigiovanni's DS, Savio told us yesterday; "Perhaps Contador will have a bad day."

Berlin Six Day 2013 – Final Report

A crowd of around 12,000 filed into the Landsberger Allee Velodrome tonight for the Berlin Six Day 2013. The large numbers continued a trend for the Six Days - with an estimated 70,000 coming through the doors - attendance figures are up rather than down, a good sign going forward.
