Grenoble Six Days 2011 – Second Night

HomeDiariesGrenoble Six Days 2011 - Second Night

We’re here working at the Grenoble Six Days 2011… it takes a few days to find the rhythm of a Six Day – usually for me it’s the sixth day.

My feet stop hurting and I get a proper sleep.

Last night I slept ok ’til around 06:00 am but after that it was disjointed, the sound of the traffic and the drone of the refrigeration units on the restaurant supply tucks saw to that – not to mention the bizarre dreams.

I stumbled across the car park to bakers at 10:00 am like I was drunk, then we had to walk all the way round the stadium to get in – they don’t open the big access door adjacent to where we’re parked until 12:00.

The band seem to be missing a singer this year, but while there are boys on the track they’ll play on.

First up is to wash last night’s dishes, fold and organise the washing, tidy the cabin and then, deep joy – the shower.

After my shower I wonder what all the fuss was about.

And now it’s 16:45 on Saturday, night two seems such a long time ago.

The sprinters in the Keirin.

It’s difficult to get the chunks of uninterrupted time you need to write properly; I have to remind myself that it’s not le Tour and priority number one isn’t filing the story – instead it’s finding Franco’s lost leg warmer, or going to the supermarket or the bakers or making the salads or whatever Kris and the boys need done at the time.

Looking after Luke Robert’s stuff is a different matter – his attention to detail is outstanding and he keeps his kit immaculate.

Race-wise last night, Jesper and Marc went well, but Iljo is cruising, like a well fed shark, comfortable for the moment but planning his next big meal.

Kneisky looks very sharp and whilst the Spaniards aren’t going to make the podium, they’ve cottoned on that ‘points make prizes,’ or rather, Euros – and they’re riding hard and fast in the devils, points and scratch races.

Grenoble regular for the sprints, Gregory Bauge.

Some of the French guys are taking a monstrous hammering, in the 35 minute madison last night, Bastien Ruffinego and Clément Carisey were lost, unable to jump the string as it passed and losing lap after lap.

Both are promising laddies, but against the likes of Keisse, Marvulli and the rest they’re just cannon fodder.

But tonight is another night.

Saturday breakfast – Roquefort, baguettes, honey and coffee; not a bad way to start the day.

A demain.

Ed was involved in cycling for over 50 years. In that time he was a successful time triallist, a team manager and a sponsor of several teams and clubs. He was also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months often worked in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed was a highly respected journalist, his tales of chasing the Giro, Tour, Vuelta, Classics and World Championships - and his much-loved winter Six Days - are legendary, never the same twice, they gave our site an edge other cycling media could never duplicate or challenge. Sadly Ed passed away in January 2025, two years after suffering a devastating stroke.

Kuurne Brussels Kuurne 2018 – Dylan Groenewegen takes the sprint

Dylan Groenewegen (Lotto-Jumbo & The Netherlands) goes from way out, Arnaud Demare (FDJ & France) scrambles for his wheel but is lengths back at the line with Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain & Italy) doing well for a man whose speciality is late season races in balmy Italy, taking third. We agree it was a great sprint from the Dutchman but it wasn't a vintage Kuurne Brussels Kuurne.

Bremen Six Day 2025 – Day Two

Here at the Bremen Six Day we have two rooms (cabins) upstairs at the track, a larger room with the drinks fridge, our tea and coffee equipment, and a smaller room with our massage table setup as well as a camp bed. I'm so glad that rather than sleep again in Kris' camper van I elected to spend the night in the wee cabin - it has a toilet en suite.

Le Tour de France 2013 – Stage 12: Fougères > Tours, 218km. Kittel’s Third Win!

We left Fougères this morning and Martin summed it up best; ‘normally you’d have expected Cav to be all but unbeatable in those circumstances.’ I felt the same, especially with Tony Martin winning the chrono, QuickStep morale being sky high and Cav being desperate to make amends after his brush with Veelers the other day.

KBC Driedaagse van De Panne-Koksijde 2007 – Day 4

It's a split stage today for the Driedaagse, 119 kilometres in the morning, then 11 kilometres contre la montre in the afternoon. The morning stage means an early start all-round and at 09.05 the bunch rolls out of De Panne, it's parky but sunny.

Evan Oliphant’s Haut Var

Down in the South of France it was AG2R and F des J reminding us that the French teams work hard in the winter, too at Haut Var. Long term 2009 Tour yellow jersey wearer, Rinaldo Nocentini took stage one and the man with the lucky four leaf clovers on his tricot, Christophe Le Mevel took stage two and the GC.

Scottish Olympic Time Trial Championship 2007

Showing he's lost none of the form which would have kept David Millar (Saunier Duval) in Slipstream Argyle pattern - rather than the red and blue hoops of British champion -- in time trials next year (had the Fort William man's front tyre not exploded), Jason MacIntyre (Edge RT) put more than four minutes into second placed Arthur Doyle (Ivy CC) in Sunday's Scottish Olympic Time Trial Championship 2007 over 27 technical miles at Irvine.

Franco Marvulli – focussing on the races he really wants to win

Twice World Madison Champion, twice World Scratch Champion, Olympic silver medallist in the madison and the winner of 33 Six Days off 115 starts - Franco Marvulli is the most successful rider on the current Six Day circuit.

Scottish National 25 mile Time Trial Championship 2012

On a grey, damp but mild and fast Sunday morning on the roads around Blairdrummond near Stirling, Dooleys' Ian Grant added the '25' title to the '50' with a fine 52:26; besting Sandy Wallace's Silas Goldsworthy - whose fight back over the closing miles hauled back a 17 second deficit on Grant down to six at the line. Last year's '50' champion Alan Thomson, took another medal for Sandy Wallace with bronze in 53:09. The event was not without controversy, however.
