Copenhagen Six Day 2011 – Day Two, the Famous ‘Par nr. 7’ Tricots

HomeDiariesCopenhagen Six Day 2011 - Day Two, the Famous 'Par nr. 7'...

Saturday, 13:20 – the afternoon sesh of the Copenhagen Six Day 2011 starts in a few minutes but there’s a distinct lack of riders; this reflects in their (and their runners’) lack of enthusiasm for afternoon sessions – but more of that tomorrow. Our guys are in the famous Par nr. 7 tricots.

Again, it wasn’t the greatest of madison racing last night, but it’s hard for the guys to raise their game if most of the house seats are empty.

Michael reckons that ticket sales for Saturday night are good – let’s hope so.

The fact that it’s the last six of the year plays a part, too – it’s definitely a very subdued vibe.

Par nr 7
Marc Hester lead after the first night, but knows there’s a long way to go.

‘Par nr. 7’ – team number seven

It’s part of Danish six day history that the best Danish team of the era ride the number seven jersey, which always incorporates elements of the Danish flag.

Back in the 50’s there was the partnership of Kay Werner & Evan Klamer; Werner then went on to pair with Palle Lykke.

In the 80’s the red and white colours were carried by Gert Frank and pursuit legend, Hans-Henrik Oersted; they won two European madison championships (there was no world madison championship, back then) together.

In the 90’s the Par nr. 7 jersey was worn by Jens Veggerby and Jimmi Madsen, who took a Danish and two European madison championships.

And now ‘our’ boys have picked up the role.

Par nr. 7
Alex in his famous #7 shirt.

A world title and five successive Danish titles isn’t a bad record – not to mention the six days of Fiorenzuola, Grenoble, Gent, Berlin and – Copenhagen.

On the subject of six stats, the best Dane – with 21 wins, 20 seconds and 32 thirds – is Palle Lykke.

Frank with 20/22/20 is second and Veggerby third on 13/16/12.

Alex rates 8th with 7/4/3 and Michael 9th with 7/3/3.

Michael has a little shop set up for the six where you can buy Par nr. 7 merchandise – hats, T-shirt, pens, key rings, scarves and the like.
I haven’t had a skek yet, but will do, tonight.

Par nr. 7
The fact that Michael has his lovely slim, blonde girl friend (L) selling the stuff isn’t going to do turnover any harm.

Kris, Martyn, Dirk (the mechanic) and me are all resplendent in our black #7 T-shirts.

Par nr. 7
Ed on hold-up duty for Jesper, resplendent in his #7 shirt.

And the others

Talking of kit, I slid into the ‘kit sort oot’ not too badly; I know Franco’s Assos clothing better than my own, and Jens’ gear isn’t far behind.

Alex and Michael both have new kit; Saxo have gone ‘baby blue’ and Alex is now with HTC.

Sorting out their under vests used to do my head in, but now that Michael is using nice new ‘Persil white’ Sportful string numbers, life is much easier.

Alex sticks to his Sportful and De Feet base layers.

Alex’s move to HTC has turned the mitts and socks routine into a doddle.

Par nr. 7
Alex texts, Jesper eats, and Colby listens to Martin.

Michael’s attention to detail knows no bounds; Saxo ride super light Specialized Prevail helmets, the first night he rode wearing a black one but switched back to white because he reckoned it looked better in photographs – that’s pro.

Par nr. 7
Alex and Michael – top pro’s.

Jens-Erik has a new team for 2011, Concordia, the kit is nice but there’s not a huge amount of cash involved.

His partner for the race, Marc Hester has a ride with Michael Rasmussen’s Christina Watches team – I’m going to pounce tonight for an interview.

Saturday – two sessions, who’d be a runner?

Afternoon session only on Sunday, though – can’t be bad.

Par nr. 7
Just one of the runner’s duties – guess what’s in these!

He's also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months was often working in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed remains a massive fan of the sport and couples his extensive contacts with an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the minutiae and the history of our sport. In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Franco Marvulli – On His Last Season Before Retirement

This Six Day season marks the end of an era. Depending upon which source you consult, Franco Marvulli of Switzerland has ridden somewhere between 112 and 117 Six Days, this makes him the most prolific rider on the circuit by a considerable margin – Robert Bartko for example has ridden 75, Iljo Keisse has 72 starts. Marvulli has won 32; not to mention four world titles – two in the scratch and two in the madison and Olympic silver in the same discipline. So how come his ‘goodbye’ isn’t a bigger deal?

Het Nieuwsblad 2016 goes to GVA

Saturday dawns crisp, cold and sunny for the Omloop Gent Gent. We have a copy of Het Nieusblaad which has all the information we need about the route so its time to head for the start. It's moved this year to the S.M.A.K complex, site of the Gent Six Day. As the car park fills with the now de rigueur coaches, ushered in by whistle blowing attendants we grab a quick pic of world champ Peter Sagan's Specialized before being asked to move on by an unfriendly team staffer...

Le Tour de France 2014 – Stage 17; Saint-Gaudens – Saint-Lary-Soulan Pla d’Adet, 125 km. Rafal Majka Confirms

Another great stage yesterday - Peraud takes a giant step, Rafal Majka confirms, Nibali consolidates, Konig stumbles... After breakfast we had a wander round Lourdes; it's one weird place - but I said that yesterday. We decided against the finish col to Saint-Lary Pla d'Adet - dead end climbs are nitemares to get off after the stage and we figured that the action might just start on the Col de Val Louron-Azet. We got up there in plenty time, claimed our spot and waited 'til it was time to grab our caravan swag.

Inside the Berlin Six Day 2017 – the Final Three Nights

The wee small hours of Wednesday morning, heading north out of Berlin, en route Rostock, the ferry across the Baltic and Denmark for the Copenhagen Six Day. I wish I could say that Berlin had an epic finale - but I can't, it was dire. Processional, flat, uninspired with no tension, no theatre, no drama.

Giro d’Italia 2013 – Stage 1: Naples, 130km. No Caveats, Cav’s the best.

Goss had a perfect lead out on Stage 1 of the Giro d'Italia; Viviani can beat his ‘bars all he wants - but Cav is King. The QuickStep boys did their job early but it all went mass critical on that last lap. Steegmans was with Cavendish coming into the final, then seemed to have a mechanical - it was all down to Mark.

Le Tour de France 2014 – Stage 4; Le Touquet – Paris-Plage, 164 km. Marcel Kittel goes 3 from 4

I didn’t think Kristoff was as ultimately fast as that; I knew he’s a beast of a boy but didn’t think that a straight sprinters’ stage was tough enough for him - but he nearly proved me wrong in Lille at the end of Stage Four. The wily Paolini and strong-as-a-bear Russian Champion Alex Porsev dragged the Katusha Norwegian through the chaos and gave him a clear run – but Kittel was just too strong, again.

Phil Young Memorial GP Des Gents 2006

The Dunfermline team of I. Condie and R. Wilson won the Phil Young Memorial GP Des Gents time trial by nearly a minute on actual time, meaning that they also won the race on handicap, but only by a small margin: eight seconds.

Andreas Müller – “I Could Ride Madisons All Day!”

It's hard to break into the six day circuit; but if there's a local rider with promise or a road star that needs mentoring then there has to be a rider on the circuit to provide hands on guidance. Enter Austria's Andreas Müller. Müller was a member of the German track squad during the last decade with strong results, like silver in the 1999 Moscow World Cup team pursuit; Madison bronze in the Chinese round of the World Cup in 2002 and Madison gold in the Moscow and Sydney rounds of the 2003 World Cup.
