Everything is irrelevant on the final night at the Berlin Six Day, except the last chase – and it wasn’t a bad one. Going in it was Kalz/Bengsch topping the board – great time trial riders and strong in the chases – but a Six is almost always decided in the avalanche of points sprints in the final laps.

Neither rider – for all their power – is a great sprinter.

I had been thinking that maybe Roger Kluge wasn’t quite as smooth and fast as he used to be, but in that last chase he was good, very good.

And Peter Schep is one of the best, too – a former World Points Champion, he never loses the wheel or comes out of that perfect crouch.

They had just too much horsepower for Kenny De Ketele and Luke Roberts with Franco and Andreas Müller in third spot.

A good finale with winners who looked worth it, something you couldn’t always say about the last chase at Berlin.

Gut the track cabin, stack everything in the downstairs cabin ready to load the camper; but they won’t let us bring the camper down until later, damn!

Take Guy’s jerseys back, fly up to the press room and send my podium pictures, back downstairs

The camper is in, get loaded, let’s go, we have 350 K to drive to the ferry.

But then the man in the white trousers and sports jacket lurches out of the darkness, high on drink and God knows what else – he grabs our wipers and hangs there, eyes staring, mouth open, blood trickling from a wound on his forehand, like an extra from ‘Zombies, Dawn of the Dead.’

Behind, horns blast – everyone wants out of here.

There’s a cop car over to the left, I jump out and run across to them, ‘mein herr, ein problem!’ I say in my worst German as I point to the gentleman dangling from our windscreen.

The cop shrugs – oh well, here goes.

I grab our chum by the collar and drag him off the camper; trying to be as gentle as possible I attempt to sit him down against one of the concrete pillars.

But then he spots the cop car and lurches off to land on their bonnet – this has the desired (for me) effect and the cop is out of the car like a ferret on speed.

On go the cuffs, and that’s our cue to scarper.

It really is time to get the hell out of Berlin…

Le Tour ’11, Stage 11 – a wet start, typical Pyrenean thunderstorm

It was a very warm evening yesterday, and we wandered back round to the hotel last night after our dinner in the middle of a typical Pyrenean thunderstorm - huge bolts of lightning searing across the sky and claps of thunder which lingered and reverberated for what seemed like 20 seconds. In the space of 5 minutes, the roads were flooded. We went to sleep in our "pod" room to the sound of pouring rain, and woke up to the same - only worse. It wasn't a nice day to be outside, let alone reporting on, or riding, a bike race.

Le Tour ’11, Stage 14 – last day in the Pyrénées

Andorra, Pyrénées. Everything about it seems wrong. For a start, it's an independent tax haven/principality sitting at the top of a Pyrenean mountain, an hour's drive over sweeping twisty hairpinned roads from the nearest town. Some pals said to me that when they went to Andorra for skiing, they thought it was OK. Perhaps the snow covered all the cracks, but I'm not sure how the inhabitants' attitudes could be masked; almost - no, everyone - we met was unpleasant, in attitude and manner.

Le Tour de France 2012 – Stage 13: Saint-Paul-Trois-Châteaux – Le Cap d’Agde, 215 km.

Le Cap d’Agde and we're puzzled. We've steadfastly avoided getting involved in speculation over the ‘d-word’ – if you regard yourself as a serious journo, you have to be able to distinguish between factual information from a good source and wild speculation on twitter from individuals who may well have never seen the race, let alone spoken to anyone on it. Maybe it's because we've been on le Tour during the Ulrich, Basso, Mancebo, Bottero, Landis, Morreni, Rasmussen, Contador - and if we forgotten any, sorry - 'affairs.'

Stuart Balfour – Racing 2021 with Swiss Racing Academy

David Rayner Fund 2018 ‘rider of the year,’ Heriot man, Stuart Balfour was busy post the 2020 ‘lock down’ and season 2021 sees him step up a level to UCI Continental team, Swiss Racing Academy which boasts former multiple World Time Trial and reigning Olympic Time Trial Champion, Fabian Cancellara as it’s patron.

Tim Mountford, Part Two – Finally, the First Professional Contract

In Part One of the Tim Mountford story we heard how the eighteen year-old Tim was living on his own, sharing a flat with another rider, working at a local bike shop and training for the 1964 Olympic Games in Tokyo, as well as being creating and being the chief editor of a cycling magazine titled the "Southern California Cycling Journal". Tim went on to race in two Olympic Games and competed at world level in the tandem sprint before turning to the Professional Six Day scene and working his way up through various sponsors and contracts to land the biggie; a place on the famous TI Raleigh team managed by the legendary Peter Post.

It's hard to believe it's nearly five years since we sat down with hime and conducted the David Walsh Interviews, his dogged pursuit of the American Armstrong's own doping and team-enablement, and the recently-published USADA "Reasoned Decision" to ban Armstrong for life and to strip all seven Tour de France wins from his palmarès. David had been in Edinburgh to give a talk in the city's Lyceum Theatre as part of his speaking tour on the subject, and we took the opportunity to spend a few hours with him the following morning at his hotel.
