Grenoble Six Days 2011… One day, I’d like to come to the Grenoble Six Days and sit at one of the big tables with friends and family, watch the cabaret, and the racing, chat, eat and drink too much.

It’s good value at 63 euros per head; that gets you in, allows you to attack the beautiful buffet and provides: you a bottle of wine, mineral water and a coffee as you watch the racing and the cabaret – one day… Oh dear!

It’s 11:00 pm and the ‘no limits’ is in full effect (that’s a standstill contest) – and yes, it’s as dire as it sounds.

If Vik finds out about this one, I’m in trouble.

He doesn’t like Grenoble, he’s seen my pics of the balloon lady and magician – if it was down to Vik we’d have a rider on the track for 24 hours, wouldn’t let the b**tard riders out of the stadium and would have then sleeping in the cabins.

Grenoble is all a bit, well, ‘French,’ but when you’re here, it’s actually pretty cool.

Gent is the ‘man’s six’ but that format wouldn’t work here; just like 34 minute standstills would have beer bottles raining onto the track at Gent.

Former track star Arnaud Tournant is up on the boards, pitted against Bauge; the record for this carry on is 45 minutes but thankfully Arnaud cracks around the half hour and Bauge get bored soon thereafter.

There are two chases, a 35 minute and a 20 minute; neither is scintillating but the riders whizzing by is just part of the show – as long as they’re not going so slow that Thevenet and Biondi start asking questions.

I was chatting to some of the French guys today, they’re not even on Continental squads – just amateurs.

Jesper and Marc continue to lead, but when it gets serious, I have the feeling that Iljo and Morgan will be the men.

Franco’s motivation isn’t the best this year; on his day, he’s the best – but I haven’t seen him on ‘his’ day for a few races now.

Ed Hood
Ed's been involved in cycling for over 50 years. In that time he's been a successful time triallist, a team manager and a sponsor of several teams and clubs. He's also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months was often working in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed remains a massive fan of the sport and couples his extensive contacts with an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the minutiae and the history of our sport. In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Ed ran his own business installing windows, and will probably not be able to work again. Giro d’Italia 2010 – Day Seven, Thoughts on That Break

We've completed our stint at the Giro d'Italia 2010, but we miss the turn for Rimini airport, the signage is dire, we're late already, off at Rimini Nord, through the tolls, U turn and back down the other side of the autostrada, there it is, dump the car, limp to the terminal. 'You're baggage is overweight sir,' abandon my shorts, T-shirts, carry my sweat shirt and jacket - still over, even though I can tell the bag weighs nothing like the 13 kilos they say it does.

There’s no wi-fi in the stadium at Berlin at the Berlin Six Day 2013, you have to go up to the press room; it’s quiet up there, there’s hard wired internet which has your pictures flying in a nanosecond and a fridge full of soft drinks and beer – a runner/journalists Nirvana you might say.

Grenoble Six Day 2011... Bed was at 02:00 am so I didn't have too much problem getting up at 07:45 to do some 'real world' stuff. The only trouble with that is I know I won't feel nearly as frisky come 02:30 am. I was meant to have an interview with Luke Roberts today, he was meant to get word about what's happening team-wise for 2012.

U23 Road Race World Championship 2013 – Mohoric Takes the Title

The much debated percorso has me in two minds – there’s a part of me which says that it’s not as tough as I’d thought it would be – but the other part says; ‘but what about after ten times!’ I walked down the Salviati today and it’s a stinker, no question, but not that long. I also walked down around 60% of the Fiesole, all of which is just a drag; albeit I think it kicks up steeper beyond where I descended from. The descent off the Fiesole leads straight into the Salviati but it’s fast all the way off there to the line with just one ‘bump.’ But maybe it’s too fast for an organised chase?
