Copenhagen Six Day 2010 – Day One

-

HomeDiariesCopenhagen Six Day 2010 - Day One

It’s 01:41 Day One at the Copenhagen Six Day 2010 and I’ve decided to rattle off a few lines before I succumb to the coma that surely awaits me.

It wasn’t vintage racing tonight; there wasn’t much of a crowd, the whole bunch looked like it was pedalling in mud and Franco said he’d never seen Bruno struggle the way he did in the first chase.

My feet hurt from all that standing and walking on concrete; and my ears are ringing, courtesy the PA.

…And that was all I could manage before I keeled over.

You have to respect the mechanics though, as we stumbled in through the hotel reception, there they were, sitting on the couch, nice looking bottled beers lined up – and those puppies aren’t cheap in this country.

Copenhagen Six Day 2010
Madsen, “Mini Mørkøv” and Smith Larsen prepare.

I was up at 06:00 yesterday, to write up the diary.

The breakfast rendezvous was at 08:00 – and there was Danny Clark, all time “king of the starts” in the Sixes – 236.

I don’t think that will ever be beaten; in Danny’s day a rider could cram in a dozen or more races from October to February – next season, that figure may be down as low as six or seven.

Danny looks younger every time I see him, he lives in Italy now; he’s slim and has lost a lot of the lines around his face, don’t ask me how.

Copenhagen Six Day 2010
Danny the Derny Driver.

He’s a derny driver, but might just be tempted to give us a song, his signature number is; “My Way” – that’s for sure!

Copenhagen Six Day 2010
When you’re world champ, you get your own shoes!

The first day is always a guddle; guys forget to bring things, we forget to do things, and there are a hundred and one loose ends to tie up. Not least of these being the 12 Saxo Bank logos we had to heat-seal on to Alex and Michael’s jerseys.

‘Three jerseys each, so how come it’s 12?’ I hear you ask.

Fact is that the boys have two sets of jerseys – the red and white Danish number 7 ones, plus the rainbow jerseys of world madison champions which they have to wear for the presentation and chases.

Copenhagen Six Day 2010
Danish #7 and Rainbow jerseys for Ed’s boys.

The Danish number 7 jersey is a tradition in the Sixes, worn by the country’s great Six Day men.

Palle Lykke was their best ever, with 21 wins, then Gert Frank – who I remember well – on 20 wins.

Of the current crop, Alex and Michael are top ten, with five wins – maybe soon to be six?

Copenhagen Six Day 2010
Alex and Michaels’ hardware.

At Copenhagen there’s no ‘rolling’ presentation, a method of introducing the riders to the crowd which has been adopted by most of the Sixes, where the teams line up in a string, pedalling side by side, in numerical or status order (best last) and roll round the top of the banking.

The speaker does his thing on their palmarès, they get their applause, swing off, tack on the end of the string and then it’s the next team’s turn.

It’s a good way to do it; not least because it gives the riders a nice warm up.

Generally Sixes will start with a points race or sprint series, to get the legs loosened off; at Copenhagen it was straight into a one hour chase.

Copenhagen Six Day 2010
Michaels Smith Larsen and Berling – smiling now…

And nobody, but nobody, looked sharp – our young guys, in the orange #3 jerseys, Michael Smith Larsen and Michael Berling took a pasting; MSL was hanging on from the start – but so were a lot of others.

Incidentally, Michael Berling took second in the Rutland Classic last year, behind Andy Wilkinson – so he’s a good rider.

Copenhagen Six Day 2010
Hollywood growls.

The organiser of the event, Henrik Elmgreen, loves the Sixes but the thinks that you need long chases.

There are 70 minute chases and a 75 kilometre handicap chase – the problem is that the riders aren’t used to these distances any more and it makes for cagey racing – guys are frightened that they are going to crack.

However, you have to admire the fact that Henrik has a lot of races on the programme for youngsters and always supports the young Danish riders.

Copenhagen Six Day 2010
Bruno tells the tale.

Whilst on the subject of long chases, Danny was offering words of wisdom on that very matter, over breakfast;

“Who’d pay to see this lot? When I was racing, we had three long chases every night and still partied until 04:00 am!”

Ah yes, it was all different back then – “The Good Old Days.”

Copenhagen Six Day 2010
Aeschi gets a cuddle.

Viktor and I always used to think that Jaan Kirsipuu would be the man to have at your side if things went wrong in a Ballingry pub.

I’ve been forced to revise this; Alexei Shmidt of team #1, ‘Rusland’ is without doubt one of the ‘hardiest bairns‘ I’ve seen in my life; he looks like a cage fighter who keeps fit between fights by laying concrete blocks on a site in Siberia.

Copenhagen Six Day 2010
Faerk, Kreutzfedt ans Smith Larsen warm up.

We have a wheen of riders – as well as the two Michaels, I mentioned earlier and our World Champions, Alex and Michael; we have Franco Marvulli, plus Danish World Team Pursuit Champions, Jens-Erik Madsen and Michael Faerk; then there’s ‘Mini Mørkøv‘ – Michael’s wee brother, Jesper; Danish Worlds track medallist Daniel Kreutzfeldt and German Christian Grasmann.

Dirk, the mechanic keeps muttering sagely; “too many riders, too many riders!

Copenhagen Six Day 2010
Franco shows us the guns.

That’s 09:40, best get down for breakfast – then there’s a cabin which looks like a plane crash to be sorted out.

Let’s hope for better legs for us all, today.

Talk to you tomorrow, ciao, ciao.

Ed's been involved in cycling for over 50 years. In that time he's been a successful time triallist, a team manager and a sponsor of several teams and clubs. He's also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months was often working in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed remains a massive fan of the sport and couples his extensive contacts with an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the minutiae and the history of our sport. In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Ed ran his own business installing windows, and will probably not be able to work again. Grenoble Four Day 2012, Day Two: Folies and Crashes Galore

The trouble here at the Grenoble Four Day 2012 is that when folks see you with a camera and hear you write for a website, you've had it. I spent a chunk of the afternoon taking pictures of Gunther, one of Iljo Keisse's soigneurs. He's back on the bike as a 'master' and has the track bike down here with him, he trains on the boards in the afternoon and actually looks good on the bike.

Le Tour de France 2017 – Stage 11: Eymet – Pau, 203.5km. Maciej Bodnar excites as Marcel Kittel takes his tally to five!

‘Sprinter stages,’ why are they so dull? Albeit ‘Bison’ Bodnar (Bora hansgrohe & Poland) did a job of enlivening the last wee bittie of yesterday’s procession. Maciej Bodnar ended the day on top. Firstly, the GC teams won’t go in the break, they’re there to look after their team leader; mountain stages are different where they’ll put men up the road so as the team leader can bridge up to them.

Grenoble Six Day 2010, Getting Ready

"It's not a real Six," says our pal Viktor - coincidentally, riders like Marc Hester (Denmark) and Danny Stam (Holland) used to say the same. But that was before the Munich Six disappeared - now they're more than happy to head south to Grenoble at the end of October. As have we, for the Grenoble Six Day 2010...

Bremen Six Day 2018, Nights One, Two and Three

At the Rotterdam Six Day Gent winners Moreno De Pauw and Kenny De Ketele carried on where they left off – but instead of winning by two laps, they made it four... dominant for sure but no spectacle. We drove north for a couple of hours then parked up in a truck stop for what passes as sleep on the Six Day carousel... Bremen is the next stop, an industrial city of more than two millions souls in Northern Germany.

GreenEDGE-pectations

GreenEDGE - pectations... oh yes. How about THAT for a play on words! 2012 is here and I’ve managed to get a blog post going in the first week of the year. Two New Years resolutions in one; get a blog post a fortnight out there, and at least make it past January 10th prior to failing at keeping to all resolutions.

The VV View: Moolah is a Must-Have?

On social media the other day I saw someone contend that perhaps the crisis that faces time trialling – i.e. the participation age range becomes older by the season, with a case in point being the Scottish ‘25’ title: three youths, one junior – is as a result of the fact that the youngsters think that to compete on equal terms they MUST have a machine which will cost upwards of five grand.

Stuart Travis – on Smashing the National 30 Mile TT Record with 53:44

The 30 Mile TT Record was held by Michael (Doctor Hutch) Hutchison with 55:39 but was smashed recently in the Leo Road Club event by Stuart Travis, with 53:44. The record actually fell before the Team Bottrill man finished with Gary Chambers (NOPINZ) clocking 55:09 before Travis depth charged that with his 53 minute ride. Travis also led his team to a new team record by a remarkable 10 minutes. Here’s what Mr. Travis had to say to VeloVeritas a day or two after he put his name on the same page in the CTT record book as some of the greatest short distance time trial riders the sport has ever known.

Wilfried Peeters – Deceuninck DS is a True Flandrien!

It must be the water in Mol in the Province of Antwerp, Belgium; not only is it Tom Boonen’s home town, it’s also the home town of the man who was in the team car behind him for so many of the ‘Tornado’s’ triumphs; Wilfried Peeters, sport director with the Deceuninck ‘Wolf Pack’ was a ‘Man of the Northern Classics’ in his own right.
