John F Murray – Sponsor of GS Modena in the 1990’s

-

It’s always sad when you lose a friend – when it happens on Christmas Day it makes it all the more painful, so it’s with particular sadness we report the loss of John F Murray, sponsor for several years of Scottish cycling team, GS Modena / M & M Windows.

John F Murray and I set up M & M in 1988; hitherto GS Modena had been sponsored by CR Smith.

When I left Smith’s and teamed up with John to set up M & M Windows I had to explain that I came with ‘baggage’ – namely a cycling team.

John took a longer than usual draw on his fag, hit me one of his stinging ‘one liners’ and that was it, we were in business with John as our loyal and supportive sponsor.

Thoughout the 1990’s and early 2000’s GS Modena/M&M riders won a lot of championships and took the team awards seriously too.

A proud ‘Brummie’ but John F Murray loved Scotland, the building game, his motorbikes, his grub and Grouse whisky.

Latterly he lived in beautiful St. Fillans beside Loch Earn.

His health wasn’t the best towards the end but I’ll always remember his chuckle, big paw dwarfing my hand and his firm belief that were few problems in life which a large Grouse in the right bar couldn’t solve.

VeloVeritas extend it’s sympathies to his wife Daisy, daughter Virginia and all of his friends.

We’ll miss you, JFM.

Rest in Peace, sir.

Ed's been involved in cycling for over 50 years. In that time he's been a successful time triallist, a team manager and a sponsor of several teams and clubs. He's also a respected and successful coach and during the winter months was often working in the cabins at the Six Days for some of the world's top riders. Ed remains a massive fan of the sport and couples his extensive contacts with an inexhaustible enthusiasm for the minutiae and the history of our sport. In February 2023 however, our dear friend and beloved colleague Ed suffered a devastating stroke and faces an uncertain future; Ed has lost his ability to speak, to read, and has lost movement on the right side of his body. He's working with speech and physical therapists on rehabilitation, but all strokes are different and each patient responds differently, so unfortunately recovery is one day at a time. Ed ran his own business installing windows, and will probably not be able to work again. Please consider joining us to make a contribution to Ed's GoFundMe page to help stabilise and secure his future.

Ryszard Szurkowski

It's with sadness that we learned that, at 75 years-of-age Ryszard Szurkowski, the man who you can argue was the greatest amateur rider in the history of the sport, has passed away.

Jocelyn Lovell

It’s with much sadness that VeloVeritas reports the passing of Canadian Cycling Legend, Jocelyn Lovell on June 3rd at 65 years of age. ‘Controversial,’ ‘outspoken,’ ‘colourful,’ are all adjectives which have been used to describe the sleek, blond kilometre specialist but for me he’ll always simply be, ‘one of the coolest.’ Always immaculate, slim and long limbed; astride a track bike with that beautiful pale blue with white sleeves and maple leaves Canadian national jersey on his back he looked like he’d been born to perform the role.

Anton Tkac, Noel Dejonckheere

A winter which has seen us recently lose two Italian ‘Greats’ in Ercole Baldini and Vittorio Adorni has taken another two champions from us; former World and Olympic Sprint Champion, Anton Tkac and former World Amateur Points Champion, Noel Dejonckheere.

Ron Webb

It was with sadness that we learned of the death of Mr. Ron Webb, professional bike rider, father of the modern Six Day format and track builder of renown.

Sandy Wallace, the Perfect Friend

It’s with much sadness that VeloVeritas records the passing of Fife and Scottish cycling stalwart, Sandy Wallace. We thought we should ask just a few of those whose lives were touched by the man to give us their tributes...

Jason MacIntyre

British 25 Mile Time Trial Champion, Jason Macintyre (Edge RT) died this afternoon, after being involved in a collision at 13.34 GMT with a Highland Council truck which is believed to have turned left across his path as it entered the council yard on the northern outskirts of Jason's home town of Fort William. The 34 year-old multiple Scottish champion was returning from a training run in the Spean Bridge area when the tragedy occured at a spot known locally as Carr's corner on the A82 road.

Vittorio Adorni

Vittorio Adorni was one of the classiest riders to sit on a bike, at a time when there were many top riders; Jacques Anquetil, Jan Janssen, Felice Gimondi and sometime teammate, Eddy Merckx. Vittorio Adorni died on 24th December at the age of 85.

Michele Scarponi

Michele Scarponi took fourth on GC at the Tour of the Alps this week and it was a shock to all when word came of his being fatally struck by an Iveco van on an early morning training ride just one kilometre from his home in Filottrano. To Michele Scarponi’s wife, Anna and twin boys Giacomo and Tomamaso, his extended family, friends, fans and team mates we extend our deepest sympathies. Rest in peace, Michele we’re going to miss you.
