HomeRaceRace Reviews14th International Critérium de Levallois 2010

Submitted by Alistair Forbes. It was a typical cold grey Scottish autumn day for the 14th International Critérium de Levallois — even though we were in Paris.

The race was very animated right from the start, with two riders clear on the second of the 60 laps.

Critérium de Levallois
Dimitri Claeys hurtles round Paris, towards third place.

These two were Loic Desriac and Thomas Rostollan, and between them they scooped up all the early primes.

About one third into the race a series of ferocious attacks produced a chasing group of 17 riders, who eventually caught the two leaders.

For the rest the race was already over.

The break eventually lapped the bunch, then some of them went straight through and continued their attack

With ten laps left the Dutch rider Leander Schreurs got clear on his own and built up a lead of around 30 seconds.

However this advantage was reducing all the time and by the bell he only had nine seconds.

In a frantic finish the German rider Michaël Schweizer snatched victory from the Dutchman right on the line.

In third place was the former Belgian Under-23 Champion, Dmitri Claeys.

This was Schweizer’s third victory in the race (2007 , 2009) and the sixth by his team.

A team from Endura Racing was listed on the start sheet, but they didn’t show up.

The Glasgow Wheelers did their best, Jason Roberts, Robbie Hassan and Dave Smith all finished in the bunch – albeit two laps down.

Rob Wardell and Grant Stevenson dropped out with punctures & cramp.

As a prologue to the main event there was a race by cycle couriers, followed by a ‘gentleman’s’ race. Both of these will be developed further next year.

A decisive battle? No. A day of attrition? Absolutely. The ‘Royal’ group at the head of affairs behind winning LottoNL ski jumper turned cyclist Slovenian, Primož Roglič speaks for itself; Christopher Froome ((Sky & GB) is back in his usual position, at the front with a hugely strong team to back him and a time trial ‘buffer’ if he needs it.

Le Tour de France 2014 – Stage 19; Maubourguet Pays du Val d’Adour – Bergerac, 208 km. Navardauskas Solo

There's always drama when you work le Tour. We've followed Tour time trials for years; roll up at the start, tell the dude which rider you're following, they give you a windscreen sticker, marshall you into position at the appointed time and off you go. This year, however we were notified that we had to attend a meeting on Friday evening at the Permanence after the stage if we wished to follow a rider. Fair enough - but then they changed the venue a few hours before the meet was due.

Scottish National Hill Climb Championship 2012

On a beautiful Scottish Borders Sunday morning, Boardman Elite’s versatile mountain biker, Grant Ferguson turned around a 10 second deficit at the top of the steep section of the Stow climb to win the Scottish Hill Climb Championship by three seconds from up and coming Steve Lawley (thebicycleworks.com), with the bronze going to Jamie Kennedy (Glasgow Couriers).

Le Tour de France 2013 – Stage 12: Fougères > Tours, 218km. Kittel’s Third Win!

We left Fougères this morning and Martin summed it up best; ‘normally you’d have expected Cav to be all but unbeatable in those circumstances.’ I felt the same, especially with Tony Martin winning the chrono, QuickStep morale being sky high and Cav being desperate to make amends after his brush with Veelers the other day.

Cadel Evans is going to win the Tour de France in 2011. Hahahaha! I'm going to say that again, just because I can. Cadel Evans is going to win the Tour de France in 2011. What a nice sentence to read and write! The time trial last night was expected to be a shootout between the world's best time triallist, Fabian Cancellara, and the next big thing, Tony Martin.

John McMillan – Reminiscing about the “Okolo Slovenska”

VeloVeritas interviewed Scottish Legend John McMillan, last year – doing some research into the 'Peace Race' recently we asked John if he’s ever ridden the Warsaw-Berlin-Prague. He said he hadn’t - but he had ridden the Okolo Slovenska, the seven day Tour of Slovakia, which in 1965 was part of Communist-controlled Czechoslovakia and which had the aim of celebrating the liberation of Slovakia by the Red Army in 1945.
